Polished concrete flooring has become popular for its superior durability and high-gloss mirror-like finish. Look around you, we use concrete for most things. Our bridges, roads, buildings are all made of concrete. If concrete can withstand the high demand placed on it, why can’t it withstand foot traffic in our homes, offices, and industrial spaces?
What is Polished Concrete?
Polishing concrete is similar to sand wooding. To polish a concrete floor, heavy-duty machines are used to grind the concrete over and over again until it has the desired degree of shine and smoothness. These heavy-duty machines are equipped with diamond-segmented abrasives. As the polishing process continues, coarse diamond grits turn to finer grits.
The concrete polishing process also includes using a hardener. It is this hardener that makes the floor hard and dustproof. Concrete polishing is a green flooring system, and LEED (Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design) approved. This makes it safe for humans and pets alike.

Our 8-Step Concrete Polishing Process
In Houston Concrete polishing, we ensure only the latest technology and state-of-the-art equipment are used to give your concrete floor the best result there can be.
There are two methods to polishing concrete:
Wet Method
With the wet method, water is used during the grinding process to cool the diamond abrasives. This reduces dust, and the water serves as a lubricant hence increasing the life of the abrasives. The drawback here is that a lot of mess is formed which makes cleaning and disposal challenges.
Dry Method
With the dry method, no water is used. Dust is collected via a vacuum-like system. This method clears the mess along the way. The dry method is more commonly used in the industry.
In Houston Concrete Polishing company, we use both methods depending on the nature of the task at hand.
Step 1
We prepare the surface by grinding. This is done to remove whatever coating is on the concrete slab. A 16-20 grit diamond abrasive is usually used.
Step 2
If there are cracks or joints on the concrete surface, we seal them with a semi-rigid filler or an epoxy.
Step 3
We begin to grind the surface with a diamond abrasive. This is usually with a 30 - 40 grit metal bonded diamond. Then, this is followed by an 80-grit, a 150-grit, or finer.
Step 4
We apply a chemical hardener to densify the concrete surface.
Step 5
This is where the polishing starts. We begin to polish the surface with a resin bond diamond grit ranging from 100 - 200. In some cases, we combine both.
Step 6
We polish again using a 400 grit resin bond diamond. This is followed by an 800-grit
Step 7
We finish off with a 1500-grit or 3000 grit resin bond diamond. (whichever we use depends on your desired sheen level)
Step 8
This step is optional. We apply a stain guard to protect the concrete surface and make it easier to maintain.
